Procedures and Tips:

We will be outside the whole time unless there is severe weather or steady rain.  We will be hiking, exploring, and playing on grass trails, in the woods, and in or near creeks.  Classes for children 5 and under do not include creek play.

  • All classes will have a maximum of 10 kids.  There will be 2 staff members present at all times.

  • Dress in ‘old’ clothes – kids often get dirty and/or wet at our programs.  You might want to pack a change of clothes for the ride home.

  • Wear appropriate shoes!  Participants’ shoes WILL get wet and muddy.  In warmer weather, hiking sandals that cover the toes are a good choice – no flip flops please.  Alternately, a participant could wear sneakers and bring water shoes for exploring the creek.  In colder weather, water-proof insulated boots are the best choice.

  • Refillable water bottles are a good idea.  We will have drinking water available for refilling but please bring the bottles filled at the start of class.

  • A snack will be provided each day.  It will be nutri-grain type bars and juice boxes because these items are double packaged.  Please let us know if there are allergies or, if you prefer, you may provide your own snack.

  • In case of severe weather, classes will move to an inside location.

  • In the spring and fall, there could be ticks and poison ivy.  We have not experienced a lot of either, but they can be found on the property.  So, when your child gets home, we advise he/she take a bath or shower and check for ticks.  This is simply good practice when you have been out exploring in the woods.

  • For our Nature Play classes (ages 3 – 5), an adult participant is required to attend.  Seating will be on mats on the ground so the adult may want to bring a chair to sit on.

COVID-19 Policies

  • If your child is feeling unwell, please keep him/her home.

  • If anyone your child regularly comes in contact with is experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell), please keep your child home.

  • Our staff will monitor their temperature prior to your arrival and will practice social distancing as much as possible during the class.

  • Staff will have masks and will wear them during drop off and whenever social distancing requirements cannot be met.  Participants have the choice of wearing a mask or not while outside.  If you want your child to wear a mask outside during the class, please provide the mask.

  • During drop off and pick up, parents are asked to keep a distance of at least 6 feet between themselves and any other families.  Please keep siblings in the car.

  • Our staff will take each participants temperature upon arrival with a forehead scanning thermometer.  Any participant with a temperature of 100 or above will be asked to return home. It is a good idea not to wear hats in the car on the way to class.  This can result in an elevated temperature reading.

  • Participants must wash their hands upon arrival.  Hand washing stations will be available.

  • We will provide a small bottle of hand sanitizer for each child/family to use during the class when we are away from the hand washing station.

  • Staff will remind participants during the class to keep proper social distance.

  • Seating will be on mats placed at least 6 feet apart.

  • Each child/family will be given a bin that contains the items he/she will use during class – hand sanitizer, magnifying glass, and any other class specific items.  Participants will be reminded not to share items.  All items will be disinfected prior to and after each class.

  • Staff will wear gloves when handing out the snack.

  • If class is moved indoors due to severe weather, all adult participants will be asked to wear face masks.  Children will be encouraged (not required) to wear a mask.  Playful Wanderings will have disposable masks available for this situation should you or your child not have a mask.   Please talk to your child and make sure he/she understand your wishes on mask use indoors.  Masks are not required for anyone with a medical reason for not wearing one.

  • All participants will wash their hands prior to departure.

A Note about Bathrooms

We do have access to a bathroom in a building, however, we are not always close to this building.  Since kids cannot always wait until we get back to the building, we also have a portable camp toilet we can take along on the hike.  Or there is always the woods.  We carry the necessary supplies with us to handle this situation.
